St Mary's Curriculum

At Ashford St. Mary’s, we aim to deliver a high quality education to all pupils. We do this by providing a curriculum which is;

  • Broad and balanced
  • Based on the 2014 National Curriculum (Y2 and Y6 will follow the old curriculum for Maths, English and Science in 2014/2015)
  • Stimulating and challenging to extend children’s knowledge, skills and creativity in order to develop enquiring minds
  • Committed to the principle of equality of all
  • Relevant to the needs and interests of all children

Religious Education

R.E. is taught using the Kent Agreed Syllabus which has been developed by the Diocesan Advisor. The plans provide a balance of learning about religion and learning from religion. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from Religious Education lessons and Collective Worship.

The Cornerstones Curriculum

We are delighted to be introducing the Cornerstones Curriculum to our school in 2014 – 2015.The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the new 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. The curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our new curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Cornerstones also provide a rigorous essential skills framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs.
